Lucky Box: Light and Silence - Between Light and Silence, a Box of Hearts Reunited
October 14, 2025 - November 9, 2025
A small, shining story in the box before you
We open countless boxes every day: delivery boxes, digital screens, and even old boxes of memories. Inside, they contain unpredictable emotions and memories, and they shape who we are today.
Baek Jun-seung's "Lucky Box: Light and Silence" is a pictorial act of re-opening that box. Like the excitement of receiving a gift set during the holidays as a child, the artist rekindles the "emotion of waiting," not just an object but a feeling of anticipation. However, the protagonists inside the box are not people, but dolls we cherished in our childhood hearts.
For the author, dolls are not simply objects of play, but mediators of wishes and mirrors of emotions.
The dolls of our childhood remain with us even after we become adults, living as surrogates for loneliness and comfort. Baek Jun-seung revisits these forgotten emotional objects in contemporary language, creating a pictorial world that straddles the boundary between reality and fantasy.
His dolls are as elaborate as digital images, yet their expressions and postures are imbued with a warm lyricism. In an age where artificial intelligence and algorithms replace everyday emotions, they offer analogical comfort to humans. Through a device called the "Lucky Box," the artist explores the unchanging forms of emotion in a rapidly changing world.
Through this exhibition, Rubid's space presents a new encounter with the artist's paintings of memory and landscapes of emotion, within the philosophy of 'reconstruction of emptiness and sense.'
Inside the box where his dolls reside, light and silence still coexist.
There we pause for a moment and recall a question we had long forgotten.
"When was the last time you waited for some excitement?"
Author's Note
Lucky Box Series
The holiday gift sets I used to receive as a child weren't just simple boxes of cookies. They were "boxes of anticipation," filled with excitement and happiness. The thrill of opening the colorful wrapping paper, the familiar mix of sweets and unfamiliar flavors inside, filled with small surprises and joy.
Just as the famous line from the movie Forrest Gump goes, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." Our lives are filled with a variety of unpredictable flavors. Each moment, sweet and bitter, is ultimately a gift of "being alive," and within it, we create our own stories.
The "LUCKY BOX" series, including "Light and Silence," pictorially reinterprets these facets of life, resonating with the pure sensibilities of childhood. The doll-like figure bathed in warm light within a quiet bookshelf symbolizes our inner alter ego and the peace of mind we've long forgotten.
The space within the work is a miniature world where reality and fantasy intersect. These scenes, rendered like miniatures on clouds, evoke the beauty of fleeting moments in everyday life, as well as the "thrill of anticipation."
Through the "LUCKY BOX" series, we hope that viewers will relive the emotions dormant in their memories and experience a moment of quiet happiness. At that moment, the box in front of you will also shine as a "Lucky Box."
Lucky Box Series
The assorted gift set we received during childhood holidays was more than just a box of snacks — it was a "box of anticipation," filled with excitement and happiness. The moment we peeled away the colorful wrapping, familiar and unfamiliar treats revealed themselves, each bringing small surprises and joy.
As the famous line from Forrest Gump says, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Our lives, too, are filled with unexpected flavors — moments of sweetness and bitterness that together form the gift of being alive. Through them, we each create our own stories.
The LUCKY BOX series, including 〈Light and Silence〉, reinterprets these fragments of life through the lens of childhood innocence and imagination. The doll-like figure seated before the warm candlelight in a quiet library represents another self — a reflection of our inner calm and the serenity we often forget in the flow of daily life.
The space within the painting exists at the threshold between reality and dream — a miniature world floating above the clouds, where fleeting moments of beauty are softly illuminated. It invites viewers to rediscover the gentle thrill of anticipation and the simple joy that once filled their hearts.
Through the LUCKY BOX series, I hope each viewer finds a moment to reconnect with their own memories and experience a quiet happiness. At that moment, the box before you may also shine as your very own Lucky Box.
